Our next meeting
Our next meeting will be on June 24 and is a Share Night. Helen, our Share Night Coordinator will have great pleasure in introducing to you Brian and Sue Bassett. They have been seriously pursuing Wildlife Photography for the last 15 years, having spent over 11 months travelling extensively throughout Africa, visiting more than 40 Game Reserves in the process.
Their travels have included several one-on-one workshops with a number of world recognised Wildlife Photographers in Africa. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of animal behaviour and natural habitats, they have both attended live-in workshops with hands on practical training, attaining the status of Ranger - Level One in the Field Guide Association of South Africa. They combine their enjoyment of photography and volunteering with Animal Conservation Programs which include working with a Wildlife Veterinarian throughout South Africa on animal immobilisation projects and Animal Research Programs both in South Africa and Botswana. Typically they spend between 2 and 4 months in Africa each alternate year, combined with travel to remote areas within Australia every other year.
Some of us have had to cancel tripping around Africa in 2020 so this is our chance to see part of this wonderful continent with Brian & Sue Bassett as they take us on a journey around Africa with their wonderful photography and many experiences.
Gerry will be sending out an invitation to all members on June 24 with the log in time for the meeting on Zoom.
We really hope to see you there.

And that's not all...
Our very own Ralph Brown is also going to enlighten us with a presentation on Low Key Photography which is coming just at the right time as our Set Subject in August is non other than Low Key. Now with restrictions being lifted it’s going to be easier for us with our subject matter.
So don’t miss out - maybe with Ralph’s Low Key Presentation we can all obtain very high scores for the evening.

Low Key Photography
And just what is our Low Key Photography definition you ask?
A low-key image is one that contains predominantly dark tones and colours. Like high-key images, low-key photography conveys atmosphere and mood. But where a high-key image feels airy and light, a low-key is usually dramatic and full of mystery. And where high-key lighting over-lights the subject to reduce contrast, low-key lighting creates striking contrasts through reduced lighting. Shadows are now the primary element of the composition.

'A Day in the Life of Gympie'
It's not to late to join in the fun Our first outing - Lets celebrate! Sunday June 21 - thats this Sunday The challenge.... We will all have a number of images to take, at 12 different locations. We will be in groups of four members, four in one car or in two cars - it's up to you. Each group will take 3 or 4 photos at each location, which they will submit for judging. At each location a close up or macro photo is to be taken, a wide angle and a standard focal length of 50mm or 35mm, depending on your camera. We will all meet at 10 am at a cafe yet to be decided, and then move out with the instructions of the order of the locations to be photographed. There are buildings (public and a church), a street, gardens and a skate park. You will need to use you imagination to find the 3 different types of images. We will have lunch with a break for an hour, also at a location yet to be decided. After lunch there will be four more locations to be photographed. We will then meet at our finish location, where images will be uploaded on to the club’s laptop. That should be at about 3.30 pm. We have had a good number of members indicate that they are going to Gympie on the 21st June, and we will love more members join us, this is one of those occasions to learn from your fellow photographers. The judges have not been appointed yet. Bring your camera, tripod, GPS, water and a sense of fun and adventure. Please let Gerry know if you wish to join all the other members going to Gympie on [email protected] |
OUR MARYBOROUGH TRIP
Planning is well underway for our Maryborough trip at the end of August. The official dates are from August 27 th until 31 st . But I can tell you some will be there earlier and some staying on a little longer. I have been working on an itinerary and I will tell you more about that as time goes by. However, there is no need to conform, you can do what you want. The only item firmly set on the agenda is a whale watching cruise. As we move out of lockdown there is a very real possibility these will book out quickly, particularly if the border is re-opened soon. Places I’m researching include the Story Bank, the birthplace of PL Travers, creator of Mary Poppins, the Military and Colonial History museums, the Bond Store Museum, the Customs House Interpretive Centre, Brennan & Geraghty’s store, the Time Canon and the Mary Ann, a truly unique steam locomotive. There’s also beautiful parks and gardens and so much wonderful colonial architecture. Photographic opportunities abound. There may even be a day trip to a magical mystery tunnel for those staying a little longer. Members and partners are most welcome. You don’t need to be a photographer, there’ll be plenty of socialising in the mix. At the time of writing we have 19 members and partners book in with 11 booked for the whale watching trip which will be on the morning of Friday 28 th . There will be a sunrise photo opportunity over Urangan Pier for those who wish to get out of bed a little earlier. If you would like to join us please book your accommodation and then let me know where you are staying, your arrival and departure dates and if you’d like to do the whale watching cruise. Huntsville Caravan Park is our main accommodation destination. The park is on the Mary river and has a hotel and shops close by. When I last checked there was 1 brand new Queen Cabin with Ensuite coming online and available for booking. Caravan and camping sites are still available. For those who have missed out on a cabin, the Minerals Sands Motel is 1 minute by car and 13 minutes on foot away from the Park. One member is booked in at the Wallace Motel so that is another choice. We would love to see you there. Don’t forget, when you book please let me know: Where you are booked, Arrival and departure dates, Are you interested in a half day whale cruise? Cheers, Greg - [email protected] |

Processing RAW files
When to use Lightroom and when to use Photoshop ?
An often asked question is, when and where should I process my RAW file ?
Should I use Lightroom (or Camera RAW) or Photoshop, or both ?
Some people have also asked, do I need both Lightroom and Photoshop ? (or their equivalents from other software vendors). Click the logo above.
